Project Overview

Following its acquisition by the University of Birmingham, Tiverton Road Baths underwent a significant refurbishment and change of use to create additional facilities for the University’s Sports department.

The project transformed the former swimming baths into a modern gym and fitness facility. Works included the removal of the existing changing cubicles, infilling of the large and small swimming pools and the creation of new gymnasiums, functional fitness suites, showers and changing facilities, alongside the wider refurbishment of the building.

R.D. Jukes was appointed to deliver the electrical and associated services required to support the transformation of the building and its new use.

The Challenge

Converting existing swimming baths into a modern sports facility required the electrical infrastructure to be adapted extensively to suit an entirely different operational environment.

The refurbishment introduced new demands across power, lighting, communications, life safety and security systems, while the nature of the existing building required careful coordination between R.D. Jukes, the Principal Contractor, the University’s representatives, other contractors and the wider supply chain.

Our Solution

R.D. Jukes coordinated, supplied, installed, tested and commissioned the electrical and associated services throughout the refurbished facility. This included new sub-main distribution and containment systems, earthing and bonding, small power installations serving general areas and fitness equipment, and new lighting, emergency lighting and external lighting complete with associated control systems.

The wider installation incorporated a Cat 6 structured voice and data network, fire detection and alarm systems, security and access control, CCTV surveillance, facilities for disabled users, and lightning and surge protection. Through close collaboration with the wider project team, each system was coordinated with the refurbishment programme and the requirements of the University’s new sports facilities.
